When we picked the Tradewind from the pasture it had been parked in we used a commercial RV tow truck. The images below detail the hitch. To show how green an Airstreamer I am I thought the first photos were of an extra that someone had placed in the Airstream, did not dawn on me that they fit into the tow vehicle. Now I know better, but the big questions remain... What model is this and can I still safely use it?

Hitch 01
Top view, rusty but sound. Weighs about a ton!
Hitch 02
Truck's eye view.
Hitch 03
From Below.
Hitch 04
Close up you can make out some raised letters.
Hitch 05
Looking at this and the previous image I can make out the word Equalizer. How good is this unit?
Hitch 06 Label
Nice plastic label, all that's left.
Hitch Bars
these two bars connect into the trailer but do they connect to the piece above too? If so how.
Hitch Bar Pin
Locking pin, only have one but I know it takes 2.
Hitch Bars and Pin
Locking pin and bars.
Tradewind Hitch 01
Curbside Tradewind hitch.
Tradewind Hitch 02
Street side Tradewind hitch
I suspect that all hitch parts are circa 1960.

I need to know what the various parts on the Tradewind hitch are for, one looks like a brake failure switch, another like a place to connect a CB.

I would like to extend this about 8 inches so I can place a a box for row of 3 solar charged batteries behind the gas tanks, what would this do to tongue weight? I am going to have to clean off the surface rust and paint to protect the metal.

What is the listed weight for a 1960 Tradewind? What is the tongue weight? Cannot find this information.

I'm out of photos for now. One thing I learned is that its not easy to take pictures inside the Tradewind with my digital camera. The curving surfaces and dark wood eat up the light. (I was using supplementary light but will increase the wattage next shoot!)

The floor was covered with new linoleum like tiles when my family bought the Tradewind and shows very little wear. Highly iron/sulfer water dissolved the fresh water tank and I have yet to see how badly damaged the other piping is but it was sound when moved.

I am happy with my Tradewind, recently (late 2014) turned down 3,800 but have to admit I was tempted. You may reach me through the Airstream Lists or direct at:
